K.P. Gilchrist was appointed to the US Naval Academy in 1910. He was a good student and exceptional athlete, and highly esteemed by his friends and teammates. He was one of only two in his class who lettered in football all four years at USNA and captain of the football team, for the 1913-1914 year. He most likely would have excelled in his Naval career, too, had it not been cut short. In 1916, he was stationed in the Philippines, where he caught pneumonia. He was shipped back to the states to the US Naval Hospital, Mare Island, California, in the hope that more could be done for him, there, but it was not to be.
