Probably born in Mariental, Russia and married in Pfeifer, Russia to Adam Sander around 1815. The Sander family moved to Herzog, Russia from Pfeifer in 1822.

There are a number of discrepancies with her name. Die Herzoger (from the Brungardt Genealogy book by Helen Hall) lists her as Magdalena Brungardt. The 1834 and 1850 Herzog census lists her as Helena and the 1857 census as Helena Bach.

There does not appear to be a Brungardt girl that could match her age in the 1798 census but there is a Magdalena Bach in Graf, Russia listed as having been born 1796. Assuming that is her she was probably born in Marienthal, Russia to Heinrich Bach (1746-1797) and Katharine Dies (1762-?). After Heinrich's death, Katharine Dies had remarried and living in Graf, Russia.

Although she is listed in the 1834, 1850, and 1857 census as Helena, all the church records pertaining to the birth of and marriage of her children list her name as Magdalena Bach.

Die Herzoger (from the Brungardt Genealogy book) lists Magdalena's husband as Peter Sander which also disagrees with the Russian census, which lists him as Adam or Johann Adam Sander (1784-1850). He was born in Pfeifer (Gnilushka) Russia to Kaspar Sander and Margaretha Streitenberger.

Magdalena Sander immigrated to the US with her son Ignatius and his family on the SS Mosel arriving New York, NY on 29 Jul 1876. She was listed as 81 years old.

Children who immigrated to the US:
1. Johannes Peter Sander (1822-1911) in 1875.
2. Elizabeth (Sander) Kuhn (1824-1898) in 1876
3. Katharina (Sander) Brungardt (1835-1917) in 1888.
4. Ignatius Sander (1836-1915) in 1876.

Also, another son Anton Sander (1830-1855) married Anna Maria Riedel (1820-aft. 1857) and they had one son Joseph Sander (1852-1929), who immigrated to the US in 1893. Anton Sander was the second husband of Anna Maria Riedel and she was also the mother of Johannes Wasinger from her first marriage.

Die Herzoger also lists one other Sander daughter of Magdalena Bach Sander that immigrated:

5. Maria Anna (Sander) Dreiling (1841-1895) in 1876

Maria Anna Sander is not listed in either the 1850 or 1857 Herzog census. She was likely born in Marienthal, Russia to different parents. There are numerous Sander households in Mariental but only one that includes a Maria Anna and she was born in 1841 to Johannes Sander (1820-?) and a unknown wife who died before the 1850 census.

As with other early deaths in Herzog (later named Victoria), Kansas, there is no headstone for her. The translated death register entry for her reads:
"1880 on the day of 10 August died widow Magdal. Sander from Herzog in Russia, age 87(?) years, fortified by all the sacraments, buried 11 Aug. 1880 in Herzog, Kansas"
