Julia Anna McClain, daughter of Barbara (née Hillsberry) and Samuel McClain, was born near Dewey in East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois.

Julia McClain and Jesse A. Hargis were married on 18 May 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. The couple were the parents of two sons.
