Former Guymon resident, Sandra Allen Powell, died Monday, October 5th, 2015 at the Brookdale Skyline Retirement Home in Colorado Springs. She was a homemaker, family genealogist, and retired small business owner.
The daughter of Frances (Harris) and Robert L. (Bob) Allen, she was born July 25, 1940 in Garden City, Kansas. She and her mother spent several years staying with family during the War and when her father returned from World War II, the Allen family made their home in Guymon. Sandra attended Guymon Schools where excelled in music, band, glee club, choir and orchestra, graduating with the Class of 1958. She was also active in dance, piano and church choir. Her love of music continued throughout her lifetime and began composing music in her 40s.
She attended OU, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. After her marriage to Ivan S. (Si) Perkins in 1959, she transferred to OSU. In 1960, the young couple moved to Williamsburg, VA, where their first two children were born, returning to Guymon before the birth of her youngest child in 1963. Sandra enjoyed raising her children in Guymon and was active in many of their activities, Boys and Girls Scouts and VMUMC Vacation Bible School. She also volunteered for the Hospital Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels.
Moving to Colorado Springs in 1979, Sandra served as a volunteer night counselor at the Domestic Violence Prevention Center's safe house, was a member of First Presbyterian Church and opened her store, "Satin Lady" a wedding consignment store. On October 24, 1993, she and Major Richard W. Powell, Ret., married in Colorado Springs. He passed away January 22, 2008.
She is survived by her brother, Blake Allen and his wife, Linda, and their daughter, Kasey, of Colorado Springs; a son, Chris Perkins and wife, Dawn; her two daughters, Julie Perkins and Laurie Perkins, all of Guymon; and five grandchildren, Tyler, Katelynn, Desiree, Annika, and Camryn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents, Robert L. (Bob) and Frances Allen, and sister, Shelley Allen.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church, 523 N Roosevelt St in Guymon, on Saturday, October 17th, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Gary Holdeman, pastor, officiating. The family will have visitation at Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, 501 NW 5th St, Guymon, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, October 16th.
