His mother was Francis Nix Cochran. Unsure of her burial, but she died young since he was reared by his stepmother, a cousin of his mother's.

He joined New Harmony Church in Sept. 1865 and later joined Hightower Church.

He was Called to Preach in 1881, Licensed in 1882 and Ordained into the Ministry in 1885.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1864 ans was in Co. G of the 4th Reg. of the GA Reserves. In March of 1865 he was captured in Alabama by Federal Troops and was released in May of 1865.

He had owned more than 200-acres in Forsyth and Cherokee Counties. In later life held a record for the man having the longest recorded beard in Georgia by the Atlanta Constitution Newspaper.
