Carl David Coats was born to Loy H. and Eleanor Jennings Coats in Forrest, AR. He graduated in 1964 from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, IN. He joined the United States Army in 1968 where he was assigned to Co A 10th Bn, 2d Tng Bde USATC and saw combat in the Vietnam War. Carl received an Honorable Discharge in 1970. He was awarded four medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He later received an AA Degree from St. Petersburg Jr. College and his BA degree from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL.
