Herbert Calderwood was born in Nebraska, a son of James H. Calderwood and Carolinn "Linnie" Clapp. He had siblings Mable Etta, Abbie B.. Clifton Dewey and Verl James. His father died in 1906.

Herbert and his mother were living with Mabel and her husband Fred Knotts ~1890-? in 1920 in Gering, Nebraska, where he was an electrician and she a nurse for a private family.

Herbert married Hazel E. Matson in about 1920 and they had children Stanford Matson 1921-2002 and Wayne Dixon 1923-1974.

In 1930 his family was living in Wheatland, Wyoming and later in Rural, where Herbert was a chief electrician working in the building trades.

By 1940 they were in Sterling, Logan, Colorado where Herbert was a master mechanic and Hazel a beet clerk.

Herbert eventually was self-employed in the real estate business.

He was a member of the Peoria Masonic Lodge 31 and the United Church in Sun City.

He was survived by his wife Hazel M.; son Stanford; two sisters; and four grandchildren.
