Anna Barbara (also named Barbara Anna) was a daughter of Andreas "Andrew" Oetzel and Catharina "Catherine" Bolender. In the early1840s, the Oetzel family emigrated from Hessen, Germany, and settled in North Easthope Township in Canada West (now Ontario). Their property (on Concession 6, Lot 6) was west of present-day Philipsburg, Ontario.
Anna Barbara Oetzel and Valentine Doerbecker were married in 1849 in North Easthope. The couple farmed south of Heidelberg in Woolwich Township (situated on Lot 26), until about 1880, when they moved to a farm west of St. Jacobs (Woolwich, Lot 39).
Valentine and Barbara were the parents of:
- Mary (1850-1914)
- Catharine "Katie" (1851-1908)
- Christina (1857-1941)
- Henry (1860-1942)
- Margaret "Maggie" (1863-1885)
- William (1866-1942)
- Lydia Ann (1868-1968)
- Edward (1872-1927)
