During the Revolutionary War in 1777, a soldier named Ezra Ross fell ill near the Spooner home. Bathsheba nursed him back to health and the two became lovers. In 1778, Bathsheba became pregnant with her lover's child. The couple, along with two British deserters, William Brooks and James Buchanan plotted to murder Joshua Spooner. Joshua Spooner was killed and his body was thrown down a well.
After all four conspirators were caught, they were put on trial, found guilty and sentenced to hang. Five thousand people watched the four conspirators hang on July 2, 1778.
