NEWPORT NEWS - Curtis Elwin Jacobs, 83, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Curtis was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on July 22, 1933 and graduated from Renan High School 1952 as the class Salutatorian. He moved to Newport News and graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in 1956 where he received the Niels Christiansen Craftsmanship Award. Curtis retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 41 years as a Patternmaker in 1993.

He served as the Business Manager and Financial Secretary for the Patternmaker's Union of North America for many years. He was a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church in Newport News for over 60 years where he served as the Building Superintendent for over 40 years, a deacon and Church Treasurer. Curtis was an amazing man whose caring spirit and loving heart warmed the lives of everyone he met. He was an accomplished wood worker and had a woodworking shop in his home. He cherished his family and enjoyed the yearly summer vacations in the Outer Banks. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Grayson and Janie Jacobs; and brothers, Jerry and Clyde Jacobs.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nancy Jacobs; his daughters, Karen Routten and her husband, Lennie, Cheryl Park and her husband, Aaron; grandsons, Hunter Routten and fiancé, Julianne Cyr, and Chase Routten; granddaughter, Rachel Park; his brothers, Grayson W. Jacobs, Jr. (Emily), Gerald Jacobs (Barbara); sisters, Peggy Brooks (Brian) and Cynthia Halstead (Mark); sister-in-law, Eula Jacobs; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church, 4700 Huntington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia by Dr. Paul Lawson. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
