Successful real estate magnate. He was just 22 when he arrived in California. In the ensuing years he built a real estate empire with his partner C.W. Clarke known as Cox and Clarke Land Company. They owned the San Juan Land Grant (15,000 acres) as well as the Haggin Grant. Those land grants are what is now Fair Oaks and Carmichael.
