“For Many Are Called But Few Are Chosen.” Matthew 22: 14

Sara Mitchell, 81, of Elon was Chosen by her Lord and Savior to sing with the Angels on February 7, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was not born into a family but was soon Chosen by Harvey and Beulah Miller (both deceased) and they adopted their daughter and became a loving family. She attended Glen Raven Methodist Church (later became Faith United Methodist Church) as a child and worshiped God there her entire life. Sara began teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir as a teenager and must have known then that teaching children would be her purpose in life.

She was Chosen by R. Bertin (Bert) Mitchell (deceased) to be his wife and they were happily married for 32 years. After two years of marriage she was Chosen to be the mother of the first of four children. Piper Flynt (Michael), Jeff Mitchell (Cynthie), Leslie Jones (Petey) and Heather Joyce (Tab).

Sara received a B. A. in Education from Elon College in 1967 and was immediately Chosen to be a teacher at Elon Elementary where she taught for 20 years. She received the Teacher of the Year Award for Elon Elementary in 1986. After receiving her Masters and Administration Certification from UNC-G she was Chosen as Assistant Principal for Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary and later retired as the Assistant Principal at South Graham Elementary with 30+ years of educating the children of Alamance County. Traveling was a passion for Sara. Her extensive travels include Europe, Australia, Mexico and most of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. She was known to always have a bag packed in case she had the opportunity to go somewhere.

Her love for God, her family, her Church and her friends were the main focuses of her life and she was always singing their praises. She served her Church in many capacities such as Chairperson of the Official Board, President of the Methodist Women, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Choir Member, Pianist, Delegate to Annual Conference, Lay Person of the Year and was selected Methodist Woman of the Year in 2014 at the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. Sara loved her outings with her friends whether it be lunch or cards.

Sara felt her greatest accomplishment was her family and was so very proud of each of them. In addition to her four children, she was Chosen to be a grandmother (she preferred to be called Mom) to Toni Edwards (Clint Ellis), Stephanie Rodriguez (Jose), Jeffrey Mitchell, Lindsey Jones, Jennifer Teter, Sara King, Cady Joyce, Joey Mitchell, Chelsea Albright (Christian) Kori Joyce and Kelsey King. Thru them she was blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren. Lindsay, Miranda, Gregorio, Anthony, Brittany, Natalie, Bethany, Chandler, Princeton, Jackson, Grace, Zoey, Caroline and Asher.

The funeral service will be conducted at Faith United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 12:00 noon by Pastor Lee Edwards with the family receiving friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Sara’s friends and neighbors, the people of Faith United Methodist Church, Pleasant View Assembly of God and Glencoe Baptist Church for the outpouring of prayers, visits, food and kindness shown during their mother’s illness. They would also like to thank Doretha and Tina with Hospice and Palliative Care for giving excellent care to their mother.
