Gottfried Hanske was headed to The United States with his daughter Christine Amalie Lindner and her husband, Gottfried Lindner and their two children, August and Louise. All of the above boarded the sailship "Orpheas" at Bremen, Germany bound for America. Gottfried suffered a stroke while boarding, but he survived that. On July 11 he suffered a second stroke and died. His body was sewn in Sailcloth and buried at sea, the captain acting as minister. Because of the adverse weather, it took three months to cross the Atlantic. they landed in New York on August 15, 1861.
