Mildred Ruth was born on March 8, 1932, in Hospers, the daughter of James J. and Mildred (Wetzeler) Riemersma. She was raised in Hospers, where she graduated from the Hospers Public High School. While in high school she helped in her father’s drug store, running the soda fountain, which was known for its malted milks. She then attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois. For more than forty years she worked as a registered nurse at the Sioux Center Community Hospital and Health Center.

On June 17, 1954, she married Dale William Stover in Hospers, where they made their home. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a part of the Mary Martha Circle and Presbyterian Women, which included being a representative on the Presbyterial Women’s Council. She was the tuba player in the Joyful Noise Band, played the organ for fifty years, and enjoyed attending Sunday school classes. She was also a member of the Reuter American Legion Auxiliary, a 4-H leader, and a Cub Scout leader for many years. Together they went on mission trips with Justice for All. Dale passed away on April 29, 2006, in Orange City, after more than 51 years of marriage.

Ruth loved spending time with her grandchildren, meeting with the “Oldies” (her friends from work), knitting baby caps for babies born at the Sioux Center Hospital, and gardening. She was also a huge Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Robert and Paula Stover, of Muscatine; Jon and Amy Stover, of Spirit Lake; Curtis and Laura Stover, of Fort Dodge; and Mary and Brian Schafer, of Sheldon; twelve grandchildren, Benjamin Stover, and his wife, Jennifer; Timothy Stover, and his wife, Emily; Lucas Stover, and his wife, Carly; Emily Stover, and her fiancé, Brandon DeCook; Daniel Stover; Martha Stover, and her fiancé, Michael Mericle; Joel Stover; Andrew Stover; Nathan Schafer, and his wife, Maria; Adam Schafer; Eric Schafer; and Brittany Schafer; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Keenan, of Naperville, Illinois; and a close niece and her husband, Lisa and Phil Seeberg, also of Naperville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Lois and John Roghair; and a brother-in-law, John Keenan.
