According to research by James L. Gore, John's paternal grandparents were Green Gore and Sarah, a slave, and his maternal grandparents were George Washington Gore and Mary, a slave. Green and George, sons of Robert Gore and Tomsey Jarrell Gore, were white.
There is an 1879 Mercer County, W.Va., marriage record online for John C. Gore and Minerva Jane Gore. (Other records have Mrs. Gore's middle name as "Virginia.") Minerva Virginia Gore was born on Sept. 1, 1865, in Mercer County. According to her obituary, Minerva was a daughter of Green Gore and Sarah Walker. Her surviving brothers were Henry and Levi.
According to census records, John Gore was a farmer.
The children of John and Minerva were daughters Arthelia J. Gore Lash (1880-1955) and Callie A. Gore (Adkins) Martin (1889-1969) and sons William Gore (1882-1901) and Cassie B. Gore (1892-1979).
Minerva Gore, 71, died on Feb. 7, 1937, in Institute, Kanawha County, W.Va. John C. Gore, 80, died on Sept. 7, 1940, in Mason County, W.Va.
