John Chapman Gore was born on Feb. 11, 1860, in Boone County, W.Va. Mr. Gore was “born a slave,” according to his obituary. He was a son of Jacob H. “Jake” Gore and Sarah Jane Gore.

According to research by James L. Gore, John’s paternal grandparents were Green Gore and Sarah, a slave, and his maternal grandparents were George Washington Gore and Mary, a slave. Green and George, sons of Robert Gore and Tomsey Jarrell Gore, were white.

There is an 1879 Mercer County, W.Va., marriage record online for John C. Gore and Minerva Jane Gore. (Other records have Mrs. Gore’s middle name as “Virginia.”) Minerva Virginia Gore was born on Sept. 1, 1865, in Mercer County. According to her obituary, Minerva was a daughter of Green Gore and Sarah Walker. Her surviving brothers were Henry and Levi.

According to census records, John Gore was a farmer.

The children of John and Minerva were daughters Arthelia J. Gore Lash (1880-1955) and Callie A. Gore (Adkins) Martin (1889-1969) and sons William Gore (1882-1901) and Cassie B. Gore (1892-1979).

Minerva Gore, 71, died on Feb. 7, 1937, in Institute, Kanawha County, W.Va. John C. Gore, 80, died on Sept. 7, 1940, in Mason County, W.Va.

The manuscript was originally published in The Gore Family Newsletter, 1992, second issue, Pages 145-150. There is a version in “A New River Heritage,” Vol. III, by William Sanders, McClain Printing Co., Parsons, W.Va., 1994. Mr. Gore wrote, “The remainder of this manuscript will focus on the mulatto descendants of George and Green Gore. They have been omitted from every Gore history that I have ever read. I have spent the same amount of time and effort in researching these Gores as I have researching the white Gores. After all, they are ALL Gores.” Page 241.
