The 1880 census recorded Charly Grumbles, 12, living on a farm in Lamar County, Texas, with father T. A., mother Eliza, and siblings: Magie, 14; John J., 10; Mary C., 8; Martha, 6; and Dora, 3.

The 1900 census recorded Chas. B. Grumbles, 32, living in Round Rock, Williamson, Texas, with wife Etta and children: Myrtle, 5; Benjamin, 2; and Lila, 8 months. Charles was employed as a "stationary" fireman (as distinguished from a railroad fireman).

The 1910 census recorded Charlie B. Grumbles living in Williamson County, Texas, with wife Etta and children: Myrtle E., 15; Benjamin H., 12; Opal L., 10; Charles O., 8; Maggie M., 5; Clifton, 3; and Eva I., 1. Charlie was an engineer at a cotton gin.

The 1920 census recorded Charles B. Grumbles living in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas, with wife Etta and children: Harry [Benjamin H.], 21, Opal, 19 [20]; Maggie, 16; Clifton , 12; and Ava [Eva], 10. Charles was a carpenter.

The 1930 census recorded Charles B. Grumbles, 60, living in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas, with divorced daughter Myrtle Lawrence, 35, and her children: Leroy A., 11; and Frances L, 9. Also living in the home was David H. Moore, 37, who was identified as a cousin. Charles was employed at an iron works.
