He graduated from the University of Utah in 1954 and completed his education at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. In 1957, Pete was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church by the Rt. Rev. Richard Watson. He spent his entire ministry in the Diocese of Utah and was a mentor to many priests, including The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi, who followed The Rev. Pete Winder’s tenure at Good Shepherd. After nearly 60-years of service to the Diocese of Utah, there probably were no pulpits in the Diocese of Utah that weren’t graced by Fr. Winder. He even served as vicar of now gone churches in Dugway and Magna. He is beloved for his-years as Rector of Good Shepherd, Ogden in addition to his years serving the Diocese of Utah as Archdeacon and Executive Officer. He also served for several terms as Standing Committee President. Many now adults fondly remember his service as chaplain at Camp Tuttle and at St. Mark’s-Rowland Hall in the 1960’s.
While serving his ministry in Salt Lake, he met and married the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Oss. They raised their two daughters in Ogden, Utah where Pete was the Rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd for 17 years.
Pete and Bonnie returned to Salt Lake in 1988 when he was chosen as the Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah.
Pete enjoyed camping, entertaining and traveling. He was passionate about cooking, gardening and nature. Most of all, Pete loved his family, friends and fellow man. Where ever he was needed, he went. He lived his live as he spoke of grace. He was always present to all at all times.
