Alice Gromley Carson, 97, of Upper Burrell, died Friday (Sept. 12, 2003) in UPMC St. Margaret, Pittsburgh.

Born Sept. 11, 1906, in Montgomery Township, she lived in the Valley most of her life.

She worked in the laundry and sewing department of Citizens General Hospital, New Kensington, retiring in 1972 after 20 years employment.

Mrs. Carson enjoyed sewing, quilting, and spending time at the family camp in Clarion County.

Surviving are two sons, Robert B. (Connie) Carson of Ford City and Elmer E. Carson of Upper Burrell; a daughter, Mrs. Janet L. (Robert) Bentley of Upper Burrell; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer E. Gromley of Hillsdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry B. Carson; two sons, James Carson and Henry B. Carson Jr.; a step son, Ernest Gromley; a daughter, Alice Marie Whitzell; two great-grandchildren, Shannon Munro and Benjamin Carson; a great great-grandson, Austin Crobenor; her parents, Obediah and Lulu Walker Gromley; four brothers, Aaron, Charles "Charlie," John and Henry Gromley; and five sisters, Cora Bennett, Marie Pennington, Nellie Truitt, Bess Trimble and Jane Balmer.

Family and friends are invited from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday to the CHURCHFIELD-PETERS FUNERAL HOME, New Kensington, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Officiating will be the Rev. Rich Nulph of Grace United Methodist Church, Natrona Heights, Harrison.

Private burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
