Shirley Hoff Norton, 81, passed early February 7, 2017, suffering complications from a broken hip and heart. She was a cancer survivor in remission for 2 years, yet after breaking her hip June 2015, had struggled to rehabilitate fully.

Shirley is preceded in death by her father, Henry Hoff; mother Sudie H. Gohlke, of the Woodley family, and her sister/best friend Geraldine Goebel who passed the final day of her cancer treatment. Shirley recently lost her son, Michael Norton on Christmas Eve and has subsequently been grief stricken.

Shirley Rae was born on January 28, 1936 on Fisher Hill between Bellville and Raccoon Bend, Texas. Her family moved to Texas City, Texas where Shirley played clarinet in the high school band and graduated in 1953. Shirley moved to Houston, worked for Jones Apothecary as a receptionist, attended business school at night, and became secretary to the president.

She married Edward M. Norton and his three young children who were her family. She was active in Garden Club, the Methodist Church, little league sports and travel with the kids.

Shirley returned to work after her divorce in 1967, learned real estate law and later got her sales and brokers licenses. Shirley was a “can do” kind of woman, fiercely independent and determined to succeed. She started her own real estate company in Houston and later took her talents to Austin. Shirley was a tenacious sales person, courageous single mother and loyal daughter. She moved back to Texas City to care for her mom in the early 90’s until the time of her death in 1993. Ultimately she returned to Austin to be near her three grandchildren, Elia, Kaila and Teo.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Toni Norton Brinckmann, son in law Adam Brinckmann, three grandchildren, Elia Norton, Kaila and Teo Brinckmann , three step children, Terry Norton, Robyn N. Meier, Andy Norton, extended grandchildren; Jessica Cooper, Paloma Norton, Andrea Norton and Holden Mock as well as nephew Scott Goebel, great nephew and niece, Gregory and Bridgett Goebel.

Shirley will be remembered for her love of cards and games, competitive attitude, and loyalty to family.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Knesek Bros Funeral Chapel, 842 East Main, Bellville, TX 77418. Interment will follow at Oak Knoll Cemetery.
