WARREN, Raymond W., 101, of Kilmarnock, Virginia, died peacefully at his home on February 5, 2017, of natural causes. He was graced with a quick and inventive mind, as well as a generous and loving spirit. A WWII veteran of the Pacific, where he was awarded a Bronze Star, he retired from the reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. A native of Rhode Island and a URI graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Ray had a distinguished career. He held 51 patents for his discoveries. Other patents were owned by the government, such as an improved multi-directional tank gun and the firing pin for the M16 rifle. His work at Harry Diamond Laboratories pioneered the field of highly dependable fluid amplification control systems. These devices are employed today in the dispersion of washer fluid on your windshield, STOL airplane controls, stabilizers for outer space rockets, and in snow-making equipment at ski slopes. He had great pride in being a recipient of the John Scott Award (given to those whose inventions have contributed to the "comfort, welfare and happiness" of mankind) and being inducted into Aviation Week and Space Technology's Laureates Hall of Fame. Ray was an avid gardener, traveler and sailor. He was skiing until age 89. He was very involved in his community, including the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Masons and Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Maxwell Warren; daughters, Lucy A. Warren of San Diego, Calif. and Eleanor W. Reed (Jim) of Hurricane, W.Va.; granddaughters, Vanessa Bennett (Darren) and Erica Reed; and great- granddaughters, Claire and Delaney Bennett. A service celebrating his life will be held 2 p. m. Friday, February 10, at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests no flowers. Remembrances may be sent to Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck, 28 Saint John's St., Warsaw, Va. 22572.
