Robert Lawrence Hawks, 84, of Galax, widower of Stella Mae Payne Hawks, whom he was married to for 39 years, passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Waddell Nursing Home, Galax. Mr. Hawks was born in Carroll County, Feb. 23, 1920, to Robert Shadrack and Ida Bennett Hawks. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Vera Louise Fortner of Galax and Pamela Kaye and Bill Moss of Lake Placid, Fla.; two
sons and a daughter-in-law, Terry Robert and Lisa Hawks of Mount Airy, N.C., and Mark David Hawks of the home; grandchildren, Jason Felts, Kayleigh Moss, Nikki Hawks, Emily Hawks, Matthew Hawks, Fieldyn Hawks, Crystal Fortner and Sherry Higgins; great-grandchildren, Robbie Felts, Makayla Felts, Keena Higgins and Adam Higgins; and a very special friend, Inez Golding. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by four sisters, Bertha Wilson, Lillie Edwards, Faith Wilkinson and Ina Anderson; and by a brother, Albert Hawks. A funeral was held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Bill Moss and Myron Dalton. Burial followed in the Chestnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
