Joanne Flickinger, a longtime resident of Anacortes, passed away at age 90 on Saturday, February 4, 2017.
Jo was born on July 3, 1926 in Squaw Township, Warren County, Iowa, to Harvey E. McBee and Anna Baysinger McBee. She moved to Alberta with her family when she was four, and then to Seattle, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945. Following graduation, she went on to the University of Washington School of Nursing. She then met Richard (Dick) Flickinger and they married in June 1947, sharing their lives until Dick passed away in June 2015.
Jo was a doer. In addition to all of the day-to-day tasks involved in making a home for her husband and five children, she found energy for painting, writing, playing piano, swimming, skiing (both snow and water), sewing, and folk dancing. Her children and grandchildren have fond memories of her enthusiasm for life and her eagerness to “dive in”. She taught so many of the kids in her life to swim! She also touched the lives of many others, as friends and also through her work with Weight Watchers.
After retirement, Jo and Dick enjoyed travel to every continent except for Antarctica – more than 25 countries – usually with their long-time friends, Dewey and Charlotte Kibler of Houston, Texas.
Jo is survived by her five children and their families: Jan Bleakney (Paul), Mark (Debbie) Flickinger, Lynne Marie Langsford (Rich), Robin Gaynor (Rick), and Reid (Gerri Kay) Flickinger. Her grandchildren include Carolyn Lyon (Matt), Heidi Franklin (Seth), Brent Flickinger (Regina), Sophie Hughes (Devon), Benjamin, James, Martinique, and Amelia. Her great-grandchildren are Analee, Devon Jr., Chase, Levi and Jonah.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Anacortes Soroptimists.
