Corinne SÉVIGNY
Obituary

"Dear Pierrette, Richard, Elisabeth & the Sévigny Family, ..."

SEVIGNY, Corinne Kernan
1924-2014
Corinne Sévigny passed away Friday October 3, at the age of 90. She was an indomitable character who was connected to pedigreed political families in both Canada and the United States. Her paternal grandfather, Francis Kernan was the first Roman Catholic to be elected to the United States Senate. Her maternal grandfather, Sir Charles Fitzpatrick, was a former Quebec lieutenant governor and one of Louis Riel's defense lawyers. She was a no-nonsense, powerhouse of a woman, who in the words of one friend, "is now in heaven, undoubtedly telling the angels what to do and how to do it."
She was educated in an Ursuline convent in Québec City, and then sent to Milton Academy, a private girls' school in Massachusetts, where she studied European history. As soon as she graduated in 1941, she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps and trained as a mechanic. In 1946, she married Canadian War hero Col. Pierre Sévigny who went on to become the Associate Minister of National Defense in John Diefenbaker's government.
A formidable woman, whom everyone knew as "Clou", she was one of the founders of the Queen Elizabeth Health Centre, worked with recovering alcoholics, and was a community activist who helped raise money to repair the Casavant organ in the church of St. Léon de Westmount. She was an accomplished amateur artist who enjoyed working in water colours. She was also a Grande-Dame in the Order of St Lazarus.
She was predeceased by her husband in 2004. She leaves her three beloved children, Pierrette (Richard McConomy), Albert (April Defalco) and Robert (Margaret Manwaring). She will be missed terribly by her grandchildren Elisabeth, Catherine, Christina, Danny, Corinne, Pierre-Louis and her sole great-grandchild William Sévigny-Stevens.
The family would like thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Jewish General Hospital who cared for her with such kindness in her last days.
Visitations will be held at Kane and Fetterly (5301 Boulevard Décarie) on Tuesday, October 7 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p..
Funeral Services will be at St. Léon de Westmount (4311 De Maisonneuve West) Wednesday, October 8 at 11 a.m.
Condolences can be offered at www.kanefetterly.com .
Thank you to Alan Hustak for the kind and lovely words above.
