Pioneer Footballer. He was a well-known football player in the earliest days of the sport and was one of the most versatile sportsmen of the late 19th century. He was first captain of the England Football team and led his side in the first ever international match ever played, against Scotland. He was also a noted cricketer. Ottaway was born in Dover and educated at Eton College and Brasenose College, Oxford. He played in three successive FA Cup finals between 1873 and 1875, beating the Royal Engineers 2-0 in 1874 for Oxford University. In 1873 he played for England against Scotland in front of a crowd of 4,000 spectators at Partick, Scotland, which is now recognized as the first international football match. The game ended a 0-0 draw. He was described by contempories as an excellent dribbler with better pace, skill and control than many footballers of his day. During his career he accumulated a total of 1,691 runs at an average of 27.27. His death at 27 was attributed to a chill.
