Weddings of Half Century Ago Described by 10 Couples

(Note: only one of those couples is included in this transcription)

Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Nesom

ANOTHER pioneer couple of Okmulgee is Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Nesom, who arrived here when there were only about a dozen white families in the town.

In Grandbury, Texas, Dec. 17, 1875, Miss Mattie Hightower and Henry Nesom were married. They soon moved to Abilene, Texas. There they lived for several years, and their children were born there.

The lure of a new country attracted them and with their family they came to the Indian country, when Okmulgee was only a trading post.

There were two stores here, that of Capt. Severs, and the Parkinson store. These stores had to have merchandise and as there was no railroad, Mr. Nesom and his son-in-law, W. A. Farr, established a freight line to Muskogee, the nearest shipping point. They hauled the merchandise to the stores here in wagons, drawn by mules.

Due bills were popular currency in those days. When an Indian or farmer brought anything to the store to seel, the proprietor gave him a slip of paper entitling him to just so much in trade.

Mr. and Mrs. Nesom were telling of their wedding recently, and the secret leaked out after these many years away from their native state that they ran away and were married, for Mrs. Nesom's father objected strenuously to their marriage. However, all turned out well and they were forgiven.

Mr. and Mrs. Nesom are the parents of nine children, seven of whom are living. Mrs. John A. W. Anderson, Mrs. W. P. Robinson, John Nesom, Jack Nesom and Earl Nesom all live in Okmulgee, Bert Nesom lives in Shawnee, and Mrs. Mattie Sutton lives in Sapulpa.

They have 24 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Although he is nearly 80 years old, Mr. Nesom is an active man, and works every day running the elevator in the Petroleum building.

Mrs. Nesom is 69 years old, and active in civic and lodge work. It was her pleasure to prepare and serve a Christmas dinner for all members of her family this year.
