Patricia Ann "Pat" (Center) Bursley of Charlotte, N.C., died peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 12, 2007. Mrs. Bursley was born July 9, 1929 in South Bend, Indiana, to Charles Ira and Veronica Ruth "Vera" (Lovekin) Center. She graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. degree in Library Science in 1951 where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and received her Master's in Library Science from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., in 1982. Pat married Harold Barrows Bursley Jr. in South Bend in March 1951. They lived in Greenville, S.C., and Wilmington, Delaware, before moving to Charlotte in 1967, where she worked as an elementary school librarian for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and also worked for more than 20 years with the Presbyterian Hospital Resource Center. Pat was an active member of the Mint Museum and was as a past president of the Delhom Service League. She loved pottery and cherished her time serving on Ceramic Circle. An avid bird watcher, Pat volunteered at Wing Haven Bird Sanctuary. She was also a past president of the Charlotte Garden Club. Pat enjoyed competitive sailing, and was a member of the Catawba Yacht Club. Mrs. Bursley was devoted to her parish, St. John's Episcopal Church and served faithfully as a chalice bearer for many years. She also volunteered her time as a member of Stephen Ministry. Survivors include her children David Bursley and his wife, Karen Bursley, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Linda Cotter of Grafton, Wisconsin; and grandchildren Christopher, Charlotte Ann, Cathleen, Charles, and Caroline Grace Cotter. Other surviving family include sister-in-law Vivian Bursley of Charlotte and Greenville, S.C., and nephews Ward L. Bursley of Greenville, S.C., and James R. Bursley of Jacksonville, Florida. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 16 at 11:00 at St. John's Episcopal Church on Carmel Road. A reception in the Great Hall will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St John's Episcopal Church in memory of Pat Bursley.
