Longtime Lutheran Pastor dies

Adams - The Rev. John H. Reents, 68, retired American Lutheran pastor, died in Beatrice Hospital early Saturday morning. When he retired four years ago he had served churches, mostly in this area, for forty years.

Gage County Native

Rev. Reents was born on October 9, 1901, near Pickrell. His father, the late Rev. J. B. Reents, for many years was pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of rural Pickrell.

He graduated from Wartburg College, Clinton, Iowa, and, in 1926, from Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa. On June 27, 1926, he was ordained at Zion Lutheran Church near Pickrell.

From Wartburg Seminary he received the D. D. (degree of divinity) in 1941.

He was first pastorate from 1926 to 1929, was at the Salem and Grace Lutheran Churches, West Burlington, Iowa.

From 1929 to 1941 he was pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, rural Pickrell, and during that time he organized mission churches at Adams and Filley.

Army Chaplain

During World War II he was an Army chaplain, serving the European Theater, and he continued service in the National Guard until 1960.

Returning from active duty in 1946, he became pastor of the Adams in Filley churches that he had helped organize, serving both of them until 1959, and in 1960 the Filley church alone.

The last six years of his pastoral ministry was at the Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Neligh. When he retired in 1966, he returned to Adams.

The past 10 years Rev. Reents was chairman of the Service to Military Personnel Committee of the American Lutheran Church. He had served as Nebraska American Legion chaplain, president of the Beatrice Lutheran Hospital Board of Directors, president of the Beatrice Rotary Club, and as a member of the Board of Regents of Wartburg Seminary.

Very active in work with use of the church, he was a member executive committee of the Lutheran League from 1929 to 1941.

Survivors

Surviving are his wife Mildred; a son, Jack F. Reents, a missionary in Lae, Territory of New Guinea; a daughter, Mrs. Philip (Jacqueline) Littleford, Orlando, Florida; brothers Walter, Twin Brooks, South Dakota, Arthur, Troy, New York, William, Fairbury, and Bernard, Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Mrs. Albert Jungmeyer, Lincoln; and six grandchildren. His parents and a sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at the American Lutheran Church, Adams, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. Ray B. Ensign officiating, Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Adams.

The body will lie in state at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, Beatrice, until 9 a.m. Monday, and in the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, Adams, from 10 a.m. Monday until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with a church council in charge.
