She was born March 23, 1940 in Scott County, Tennessee. Elsie had made Amherst her home for many years before moving to Berlin Heights, where she resided for the last three years.
She was employed as a custodian at Oberlin College for fifteen years before retiring in 2001. Her hobbies included puzzles, word search, knitting, cooking, gardening and tending to her flower beds. Elsie was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. Her greatest joy was her family and the time she spent with them.
Survivors include her son Timothy R. Phillips (Tina) of Vermilion; her daughters Cassie Stevens of Lorain, Judy Corder of Berlin Heights, Debora (Ron) Silvy of Amherst and Janet Wilbur (Greg) of Berlin Heights; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; her brothers William C. Walker of Lorain, David J. Walker (Barbara) of Oberlin, Bobby L. Walker of Oneida, TN and Gary D. Walker of Winfield, TN; her sisters Opal Anderson of Winfield, TN and Donna Godbey (Charles) of Somerset, KY; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-four years Hubert Edward Phillips on February 27, 2000; and her parents Charlie and Etta Walker (nee: Ryan).
Friends may call Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Friday, at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Godbey and Delyn Phillips both brother in laws will co-officiate. Burial will follow at Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.
