Private First Class Robert Lewis Dial was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC Dial served our country until March 15th, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was married. It was reported that Robert died when his helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. PFC Dial is on panel 06E, line 009 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

I was with the 1st Cav Div. I just landed on the hill top over looking the delta, when you came in on helicopter tail #0E080ACD with part of my platoon on board. When the huey top rotor blade hit the ground you and your crew and Sgt scotts squad went end over end over the top of the mountain and down the other side. All the men on board flew out of the huey. Some with broken legs broken backs. Fred lost both legs. He was on the ground when the tail rotor hit him. Sgt Bragg lost one leg. All were hurt bad. You were the only one to stay on board as you were still strapped in. I pulled you out with help from a couple of others. I did all I could do to bring you back. I will never forget you. When I meet with these guys Perry, Villie and Fred, this year at our reunion, we will all have a drink for you. For you were a brother to all of us one of the 58,000 who never made it home. God bless you Robert for I have thought of you a thousand nights and your family. Till we meet again, just a brother. Earl Watters.

From your sister: To my only brother: I was so young when you died for our Country. I remember very little but you remain very alive in my heart. You my brave brother were the very first person to die in this war from our County. You are never forgotten! Love and miss you very much. Ruth Russell, 12601 Birchwood Circle Laurinburg, NC, 28352.

You are my hero: I think about you so very much our train rides when we were such small children. Now I tell my grandchildren about our childhood days so long ago. Some of my very happiest memories. I miss all of the things we never got to do. I love and miss you, Debbie. Shelby Dial, 414A Pinewood Pk, Laurinburg NC 28352.

I love and miss you: Robert, March 15, 1966, I remember that day like it was yesterday. I love and miss you so much, but I know that you are in heaven with our wonderful Mother and that makes me happy. Your sister, Joann Dial Thrower, 10361 Bostic Rd, Laurinburg NC 28352.
