Cpl James Edward Debrew, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Whitakers, NC.

Corporal James Edward Debrew was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Debrew served our country until May 10th, 1970 in Cambodia. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that James died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. CPL Debrew is on panel 10W, line 011 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

James Edward Debrew was born August 30, 1949 and his home of record was Whitakers, North Carolina. He served in Vietnam with the 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He was a Currahee. James died on May 10, 1970 in Cambodia, when this unit was attempting to cut NVA Supply lines, coming into South Vietnam. According to "The Stand Alone Battalion" by Jerald Berry and Joe Alexander, there were eight Currahees killed that day and twenty-eight others wounded. James is buried in Red Hill Cemetery across from Red Hill Baptist Church, eight miles east of Whitakers, North Carolina. God rest your soul, Currahee! He served with the 3rd Battaion, 506th Infantry Regiment, "Currahees", 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagles", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
