John was born in Sciota Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan, the son of Peter John Hurst and Sarah Anne (Kinney). He married Florence Soper on June 28, 1913, at St. Isidores Catholic Church in Laingsburg, Michigan. Their children were Anna Elizabeth Woodworth (b.10-9-1914 d.5-5-1994), John Bernard "Dimp" Hurst (b.8-24-1915 d.11-4-1977 Lansing), Clyde Francis "Squint" Hurst (b.5-28-1918), Donald Hurst, Ernest James Hurst (b.2-20-1923), Mary Etta Ley (b.4-26-1925), Alice Loretta Hobrla (b.9-15-1926 d.9-26-1997 Lansing), Robert Leo Hurst (b.6-27-1928), Patricia Jean Rourke (b.8-1-1929 d.10-23-1975), Paul Edward Hurst (b.9-9-1930), Joseph Hurst and Barbara Jane Rourke (b.12-3-1932).

He was a farmer by profession, and a member of St. Isidores Catholic Church, active in the Holy Name Society. Though he suffered from heart and lung trouble (asthma) for about eight years, his death came unexpectedly and was determined as coronary occlusion.
