Momma was born at home in Harriman, TN to Lonnie and Oma Sylvia. She was 3rd from the youngest of 11 surviving children. My grandmother said she didn't have children, she had "field hands"! Mom told us about having to get up and milk the cows before she walked to school every day. One of my school teachers grew up close to her family and she told me she had never seen so many kids with orange hair as with my mom's family. Everyone was orange headed except 1! Mom graduated from Oliver Springs High School in 1954 along with her brother William, they were not twins, but just very close in age. Uncle Williams twin died at a few months old due to diphtheria.

She married my dad on August 1, 1962 in Folly Beach, SC. She already had my oldest sister Tenna, then along came 4 more girls. Mom lost a baby and always said that was her little boy. Mom ended up with 5 girls, Tenna Gay, Dusty(Nancy Marlene), KK(Krystal Kale), Tracy Denise, and Brenna Megan.

She worked hard to support us because dad drank a little to much. Every morning we would get up for school and have red lip prints on our cheeks where she kissed us goodbye. We always had a large garden every year and mom would spend hours canning everything she could. We barely scraped by, but she never complained about life. I know it was hard on her being basically a single parent raising us, but she never did leave dad. She was raised that once married, always married, but dad was the love of her life, no matter what he did.

In 2006 she was diagnosed with an agressive form of brain cancer that was incurable. She didn't want to leave her girls, and her new great granddaughter. She fought for months. In November 2007 I was with her and she told me she could hear the angels singing and it was beautiful. She couldn't hear what they were singing, but could here them from far away. She told us all that she would finally get to hold her little boy in heaven. She would sit and stare up in the corner and just smile and I know she was seeing our Lord or the angels! December 2007, she told me again that she could hear the angels and they were very close, she could hear what they were singing. She said she was going to tell everyone goodbye at that time. I told her "momma, don't tell them goodbye, tell them you'll see them in a little bit" as I know I will see her again. Momma told everyone that she wouldn't say goodby, she would tell them "i'll see you in a little bit", before she slipped into a coma. On December 30, I knew it was time so me and my sister were holding her hands and I whispered in her ear that "it's time to meet Jesus momma" and my momma quit breathing. I'll see you again momma. She is loved and missed every day. She would be proud that she now has 4 great grandsons now, the boys she always wanted.

It's hard to describe mom in just a few paragraphs. She was beautiful, funny, loyal, and loved us unconditionally. She was also a stubborn, fiery red head. She was the rock that held us together.
