Joseph W. Poole, 93, passed away Friday, February 3, 2017 in Hamilton Grove Nursing Facility in New Carlisle.

Joe was born May 4, 1923 in Finley, TN to the late Joseph and Flossie (Robertson) Poole. On September 21, 1957, Joe married the love of his life Joan (Michalski) Poole. She preceded him in death on September 9, 2014. Joe was also preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Hollingsworth; and a brother, Bobby Poole.

Survivors of Joe include a niece, Charlotte (Samuel) Totten; great-niece, Samantha (Jeremy) Miller; great-great niece, Addison Miller; nephew, Mitchell (Lorissa) Michalski; great nieces and nephews, Matthew, Michelle, Brandi and Tyler Michalski; brother, James (Octoma) Poole.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army Military Police during WWII. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. During his service to his country, he crossed the equator and was assigned to protect USO performers, including Bob Hope and Jerry Colonna. One of his proudest memories was guarding a high ranking Japanese General during the Japanese War Crime Trials. Joe was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1855 in Dowagiac and the American Legion Post 0051 in Buchanan, MI.

Joe worked for Clark Equipment for 34 years. He was a member and a Union Steward for the AFL-CIO Local 468. Joe was a master mechanic. If he could not repair it, one could safely throw it away! Joe and Joan traveled in their motor home to Texas and the upper peninsula of Michigan. Joe was quite a “pool shark” in his day. He was the “unofficial mayor of Indian Lake” in Michigan. Joe led the parade of pontoons to celebrate the July 4th festivities for decades.

Joe loved animals and they sure loved him. He had dogs (Smokey, Blackie, Snuggles, and Kojak), cats, ducks (Daffey and daisy) and even a squirrel for pets. Joe and Joan would both care for stray animals. He enjoyed euchre and riding his battery powered scooter. He especially enjoyed giving rides to his great, great niece Addison. At visits, after giving Uncle Joe a kiss, Addison would polish the scooter to a mirror like finish, which really tickled him.

The family would like to recognize and thank special friend, Lynn Ironside who shared many moments with Joe and Joan. They would also like to "Thank" the Heartland Hospice Team members, Christine, Gina, Amy, Heather, and Kim for their caring and support; the Hamilton Communities West Center Nurses, Aides and Staff who kept Uncle Joe comfortable with their gentle care as the end drew near; the Hamilton Communities Rehab Nurses, Aids and Staff; and the Pointe Nurses, Aides and Staff for the care given to Uncle Joe. There were many Hamilton Communities employees who were especially helpful to Uncle Joe and his niece, Charlotte. We would like to mention as many as we can. Nurse Kelly, you are an angel on earth! To Nurses, Amy, Danielle, Liz, Leila, thank you. To C.N.A.’s and Aides, Ellen, Richard, Michelle, Jennifer, Janice, Tiffany, Shelly and the Housekeeping staff thank you. Thank you to Dr. Laura Hannon and assistant Wendy.

Visitation for Joe will be 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Wednesday, February 8, 2017 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. where a Funeral Service will begin at 12:00pm.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, any animal shelter or the Hospice Foundation.
