In 1862 he married Anna J. Higgins of Waterford, NY. Mrs. Root's death occurred in the autumn of 1865.
In May 1867 he married Ida C. Gordon of Columbia, MO. Ida died in September, 1896, leaving three sons, Edwin B., Walstein and Oren, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Flint Nichols and Miss Laura Root.
On December 16, 1901, Prof. Root married Mrs. Anna Ray Quisenberry of Carrolton, MO, a daughter of a judge of the Supreme Court in Missouri, who survives. He leaves one brother, Hon. Elihu Root, ex-secretary of war and now secretary of state.
