William A. Armstrong was the son of William F. Armstrong and Rocksanna Thompson Armstrong. He enlisted in the Civil war in the 27th O.V.I when Lincoln called for volunteers, then in the 12th cavalry, then in the 9th with his brother Nelson Armstrong. His father William F and a brother Thompson were in the 48th Ohio infantry. Thompson was wounded at Shiloh, tranported north and died May 5 in
the hospital in Cincinnati, is buried at Spring Grove cemetery the 6th of May 1862.

William was first married to Rachel Thompson in Ohio. They had a daughter named Olive.
He married 2nd to Catherine Mallory. They had a son named Charles and daughter named Tobitha.
His brothers and sister were Thompson, Naamon, David T., Nelson F., Elizabeth Ann, and George W. Armstrong.

Cemetery transcription says:
W. A. Armstrong, Corpal, Company L, 9th Ohio Calvary.
He is buried next to his wife, Catherine Armstrong.
