Sarah Frances Ames was the second of three children born to Hezekiah Ames and Adalusia Thomas. On 15 December 1867, at the age of 17, she married Leander Bradford Smith, son of George Washington Smith and Jane Calderwood Carver. They were the parents of four children: Bertha Etta Smith (1870-1931; m. Charles Edwin Meservey), Minnie Carver Smith (1872-1936; never married); Orrin Frederick Smith (1877-?; m. Cora Luella Hopkins), and an unnamed infant daughter, who died when she was 3 weeks old. Sarah died at the age of 47 of endocarditis, and is buried in Calderwood Neck Cemetery.
