Teter was probably named after his mother's brother Teter Myers.

Teter and Isabella Blair had a farm near Leslie, Michigan. Family lore tells us that upon the death of Isabella, Teter was grief stricken and he left his children Cora and Henry with his wife's relatives in Charlotte, Michigan, and went by boat to California during the gold rush. When Teter returned he bought a farm near Rives Junction, in Tompkins Township, Jackson County, Michigan and remarried.

He married Isabella on 13 Apr 1854 in Eaton County, Michigan. He married Sarah on 09 Apr 1868 in Concord, Michigan.
