Vivian Joyce Barker, of Odenton, MD, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from complications due to a stroke. She was born in Callaway, Nebraska, but spent much of her childhood in Hyannis, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Barker and Edith Morrell, her stepfather, Robert Morrell, and her brothers, Donald and Charles Barker. She is survived by her sister, Maxine Dockendorff, and her three children, Deborah Smith McNerney, J. Robert Smith (Laurie), and Conrad E. Smith (Dottie). She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Vivian attended Gallaudet University where she was a member of Phi Kappa Zeta sorority. She graduated from Gallaudet University in 1956 with a degree in library science. After graduation, she married Fletcher J. Smith, Jr. and raised a family in Bowie, MD. After some time, she returned to work at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School as a media specialist. After retirement, Vivian moved to Salem, OR and spent many wonderful years with Royal Teets and his children, Joi Teets Scheele and Stan Teets. She returned to Maryland in 2013 to be closer to her family who enjoyed precious last years with her.
After losing her hearing at a young age, in adulthood she became an active participant and advocate in the deaf community. In October, she was able to attend her 60th college reunion at Gallaudet.
