Vivian attended Gallaudet University where she was a member of Phi Kappa Zeta sorority. She graduated from Gallaudet University in 1956 with a degree in library science. After graduation, she married Fletcher J. Smith, Jr. and raised a family in Bowie, MD. After some time, she returned to work at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School as a media specialist. After retirement, Vivian moved to Salem, OR and spent many wonderful years with Royal Teets and his children, Joi Teets Scheele and Stan Teets. She returned to Maryland in 2013 to be closer to her family who enjoyed precious last years with her.
After losing her hearing at a young age, in adulthood she became an active participant and advocate in the deaf community. In October, she was able to attend her 60th college reunion at Gallaudet.
Memorial Service to be held at Belcroft Bible Church, 13000 Beechtree Lane, Bowie, MD 20715 at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gallaudet University, Office of Development, EMG Memorial Building, 800 Florida Avenue, NE, Washington, D.C. 20002-3695.
