Joe Angell, age 82, of Linton, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Autumn Trace in Linton. He was born in Madison County near Summitville, Ind., the son of Charles and Marie Angell. At age 12, his family moved to Tipton, where he graduated from Tipton High School in 1953. He married Joyce Ann Clary on July 3, 1955.

Joe started his career in the grocery business August 1951 as a stock/sack boy with Kroger while in high school. During his 25 year career with Kroger, he managed stores in Franklin, Richmond, New Castle and Elwood, Indiana. He planned with merchandising and engineering departments, as well as implemented the opening of what was then known as “superstores” in several Central Indiana cities during the early 1970’s. In 1975, Joe was promoted to District Manager, responsible for sixteen stores in Western Indiana and East Central Illinois.

In November 1976, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own business, purchasing the former Shurway Supermarket from Allied Grocers of Indiana located in the Linton Shopping Center. May of 1977, he purchased the second Shurway Supermarket from Dave Sollars, located in Sullivan. In 1985, he purchased the Linton Shopping Center from Hook’s Drugs. In 1986, the names of the supermarkets were changed from Shurway to Angells. In 1991, thirteen properties in Sullivan were consolidated to make way for new grounds-up supermarket. In 2012, the Supermarket operations in Linton and Sullivan stores were sold to Baeslers, Inc.

Joe is a member of the Linton First United Methodist Church, served on the board of directors for Allied Grocers of Indiana from 1978-1984, served on the Board of Directors for Citizens National Bank of Linton from 1986-1996, and was a thirty-six year member of the Linton Rotary Club from 1977-2013.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce Ann Angell; his three daughters, Vickie (Vic) Brown of Linton, Linda (Terry) Elliott of Linton, Pamela Gentry of Linton; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Angell of Linton; eight grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Brown, Nickie Gentry, Cory (Stephanie Gilbreath) Gentry, Jennifer (Cullen) Cundiff , Lisa Elliott, Jeremy Elliott, Chris (Megan) Angell and Nick (Tasha) Angell; and seven great-grandchildren, Cordell, Zoey, Romeo, Miley, Rylee, Peyton and Caden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Angell on May 8, 2011; two sisters, Evelyn Larner and Jane James; and one brother, Don Angell.

Funeral service will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, Rev. Jack Shake officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-8 p.m., and Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
