He married Doris Irene (Larson) Greiner on May 3rd 1980 in North Ferrisburgh, Vermont.

CHARLOTTE, VT. - Nelson "Mike" Van Vliet Claflin, age 91, who lived most of his life in Charlotte, died on January 17th 2017 at home at The Residence at Shelburne Bay in Shelburne, Vt.

Born on September 15th 1925 in Vergennes, Vt., the son of Sidney Ethan and Lela (Van Vliet) Claflin.

He worked on the family farm with his father and brothers.

After his father's death, he continued in partnership with his brother Walter (Sonny) until his passing in 1982.

He continued farming by himself until selling part of the farm in 1987 and the remaining portion in 1998.

He was educated in the one room Kingsland School on Route 7 in Charlotte.

He took the Agricultural Course in Vergennes High School, graduating in 1943.

Him and his wife Doris built a home on the Mt. Philo Road, which was a part of the Claflin farm. They enjoyed their home, the beautiful view of the lake, the mountains, weather changes and many beautiful sunsets.

They purchased an RV and traveled extensively in the states and Canada. They enjoyed eighteen years of travel, selling the RV in 2006.

In 1990, they purchased a home in Zephryhills, Florida and spent many enjoyable winters there, meeting new friends from the different states and Canada.

They also enjoyed traveling to Scotland, England and France. The first trip to Scotland, on a tour with Clafliins from other states, they saw the original MacLachlan Castle. They also had the opportunity to fly on the Concord airplane to England and take the Chunnel to Paris. They also were able to go up the Trade Towers in New York City and the Statue of Liberty when it reopened.

Mike was a member of the North Ferrisburgh United Methodist Church at 227 Old Hollow Road and had held the office of Financial Secretary and Trustee.

He was a Trustee of the North Ferrisburgh Cemetery.

He joined the Charlotte Grange #398 in 1943. He was also part of Pomona, State and National Grange.

He also belonged to the Mayflower Society, Vermont Society of the Sons of American Revolution (SAR), the St. Andrew Society and the 251 club.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Sidney and Lela Claflin, his brothers Sidney (Buzz) and Walter (Sonny), sister in law Grace Claflin, sisters Elizabeth, her husband Richmond Barr, Helen, her husband Rutherford (Hap) Smith and Dorothy, and her husband Clyde Royce, a niece Cynthia Barr Saunders and a nephew William Claflin.

Burial will be in the North Ferrisburgh Cemetery in Ferrisburgh, Vt. at a later date.
