US Congressman. He moved to Syracuse with his family in 1842 and completed his education in the local schools. He served in the Army during the Civil War, enlisting in the 122nd New York Regiment, losing an arm and attaining the rank of Brevet Major before he was discharged in 1865. After the war Poole became US Internal Revenue Service Assistant Assessor for western New York. From 1868 to 1870 he was Onondaga County Clerk, and from 1879 to 1888 he was US Pension Agent for western New York. He was an partner and investor in several local businesses and banks, and was commander of the Grand Army of the Republic in New York. In 1894 he was elected to the US House as a Republican and served one term, 1895 to 1897. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1896. In 1899 Poole was appointed US Marshal for western New York, an office he held until his death.
