Our beloved only child, Matthew (Matt) Robert Henry’s earthly journey ended when God called upon Matt to join Him in Heaven on January 29, 2017 at the age of 31. What parents are ever prepared for the loss of a child? We recognize that Matt is now here with us in a new way to guide his family and friends on our earthly journey until we are joined with him in God’s Kingdom.

Matt was born on June 11, 1985 in Farmington, New Mexico. He was always full of energy and we loved our travels to the desert, riding in his first hot air balloon in the Colorado Rockies and his favorite, Disneyland in California. As a family, we moved back to our birth state of Iowa so that Matt could be raised around his extended family. He attended St. Augustin Elementary School, Merrill Middle School, and Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA, graduating in 2003. During high school, Matt excelled in Japanese which culminated with a student trip to Japan. He was also the Rifle Team Commander in his senior year with the Junior Marine Corps ROTC, where he earned the Distinguished Expert Rifleman award and was a member of the Knights MROTC Drill Team. Matt’s Dad loved the many trips he made around the country with him and his fellow cadets.

Matt graduated from Des Moines Area Community College in 2009 with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences. From there he joined Firestone Service Center in Des Moines. He followed this path to his current career with Wells Fargo Bank in West Des Moines and was promoted to the Department of Loss Mitigation. He was a creatively good cook and enjoyed grilling out with family and friends. His other true passion was flying drones with his Dad and his drone flying buddies.

We didn’t fully comprehend the many friends who expressed so much love for him on Facebook, his social media connection. We know that he was bigger than life, filled a room with much humor and expressed genuine care for everyone with whom he came in contact. Wells Fargo was home to Matt and he reached out to all of his work family there who constantly embraced him. People always described him as a great and true friend.

Matt is survived by his parents, Ann and Steve Henry, his Uncles and Aunts, Mike and Nedra Henry, Janice Henry, Patrick and Judith Henry, Mark and Lori Henry, Tim Henry, and Dan and Marquetta Kinnamon. He is also survived by many, many cousins who all found him to be a genuinely lovable man.

His funeral will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, IA on Monday, February 6, 2017 with visitation from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:45 pm. There will not be an internment after the service since Matt’s cremains will remain with his family.

Memorial contributions can be made to: Roosevelt High School, 4419 Center Street, Des Moines, IA 50312, in the name of: Matt Henry, 2003 Graduate, or St. Francis of Assisi Parish School, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, IA 50266, in the name of: Matt Henry.
