German motorcycle racer. Born in Winterbach, a small village near St.Wendel, Saarland, SW Germany. During the late 1950s and early 1960s he was know as the "Fastest Police Officer in Europe". His local race circuit was at St.Wendel and in July 1964 he finished second there behind Heiner Butz. He preferred to ride British Nortons and his was tuned by ace tuner Ray Petty. In the next race at Solitude he was following the German Champion Walter Scheimann approaching the Hedersbachkurve when the rear wheel of Scheimann's machine locked up, and Recktenwald could not avoid crashing into the back of him. Rushed to a local hospital with what was thought to be non-serious injuries he later died. Friends erected a commemorative stone at the Hedersbachkurve and flowers are still left there to this day. As is the habit in Germany, after so many years, unless further rent is paid, a grave is removed, and this appears to have happened here.
