Stella Cowart Chambers Banks, 89, of 113 Mark Drive, died Feb. 6, 2002, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late John Edmund and Leila McClure Cowart. She retired in 1989 from Banks Flower Nursery, Palm City, Fla., of which she was owner. She was a member of Russell Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Sue and James Drummond of Travelers Rest, Geraldine and Arthur Pace of Greenville, and Olamae Redding, also of Greenville; sons and daughter-in-law, Charles and Barbara Chambers of Greenville, Robert Chambers of Taylors, and a son-in-law, Milo Helton of Greenville; 28 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and her dearest and most loving friends, the Rev. and Mrs. Ted (Mary Louise) Gaines. She is preceded in death by two daughters, Josephine Helton and Lela Cole; one son, James (Jake) Cowart; daughters-in-law, Shirley Chambers and Carolyn Cowart; and son-in-law, Frank Redding.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Russell Memorial Presbyterian Church Life Center Building Fund, 31 Calhour Ave., Greenville, SC 29617.

Visitation will be held tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m., with burial at Graceland Cemetery West.

Family members are at their respective homes.
