Last Pearl Harbor Survivor in Berks County

Daniel S. Schroeder, 96, of Wernersville, PA, passed away Sunday, January 29th, at Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading while in the company of loving family members. Daniel was born in Reading, PA on August 12, 1920, a son of the late Mary Ann (Schoener) and Frank Moyer Schroeder. He was the widower of Alberta A, (Krug) Schroeder.

Daniel was a lifetime member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church Reading, PA 19601. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Captain in WW II of the USS Ash at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 and was the last living member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors from Berks County. He also worked as a Boiler Inspector at Hartford Steam Boiler.

Dan is survived by nephews Thomas W. Gross, companion of Linda F. Reiber, of Temple, PA, and Donald Noll, husband of Ginny, of Naples, FL; niece Nancy Chillas, companion of Frank Butzer, of Lancaster, PA; and very close friend Dawn E. Noll, of York, PA.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Emily Christman and Mary Gross.

Friends are invited to call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, February 2nd at Feeney Funeral Home in Reading, Pa. and 9:00 to 9:30 AM on Friday, February 3rd at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Reading, Pa.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM at St. Paul RC Church followed by interment at Gethsemane Cemetery Reading, Pa. with full military honors.
