Sylvia Rosalyn (Schulze) Griffin was born on July 7, 1924, in Wright City, Missouri to Olga Rose (Jordan) and Rev. Wesley Otto Schulze. She spent the first seven years of her life in Missouri as her father ministered at several Methodist churches. The family moved to San Antonio in October of 1931. They lived there for six years before moving to Austin, where she graduated from Austin High School in 1941. She married Carroll Smith on Dec. 24, 1943, in Austin. He was killed in World War II when his plane was shot down over northern Italy on Oct. 21, 1944. She had a strong bond with in-laws, Mollie and Carroll Smith, throughout the rest of their lives. She married Lee Griffin on Jan. 20, 1946, in Portland. At the time, he was the pastor of the Methodist church in Portland. The couple served as a team through his appointments to 14 churches in the Southwest Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church. This included the First United Methodist Church in Uvalde from 1969-1976. They were also foster parents, caring for 45 foster children in 22 years. In 1984 the couple retired, moving to Canyon Lake where the family says they lived at Roadrunner’s Roost for 21 years, where they found joy in gatherings with family and friends.
