Mrs. Jewell Gray Benton Watkins, 89, of Hiawassee, GA, formerly of Whiteville and California died Saturday, January 28, 2017 in Hiawassee. She was born December 15, 1927 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late S.T. Benton and Denzil Stevens Benton. She was the widow of William B. Watkins, Jr.

Jewell graduated from Ventura Junior College and received a degree in archaeology.

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Julia Anne Watkins of Hiawassee, GA; a sister, Ann Benton White of Whiteville; three nieces, Rosemary Kaveh, Cindy Byrd and husband, Russell, Gena White; several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, George and Paul Benton; a brother-in-law, Gene White.

A graveside service is planned for 3:00 pm Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at Columbus Memorial Park by the Rev. Paul Stallsworth. The family will receive friends one hour prior.
