William's first wife Ellen Cavalier, left him and his two daughters, Rebecca and Georgina for the theatre. Not knowing what to do, William booked passage back to England with his daughters to get help from his mother, Mary Morley Chadburn. His daughter Georgina, got sick on the ship and died and was buried at sea enroute to England. She was about 3 months old.

He married Mary Smith in England on March 20, 1874, they left Rebecca with William's parents in England and came back to the United States, settling in Pennsylvania, where William started his hosiery business. They had six children, many of which died at birth or as young children. Mary died in February of 1882 and is buried in Philadelphia.

(Rebecca eventually came to the United States with her grandparents, (John) Henry and Mary Morley Chadburn, and settled in Utah).

William then was traveling between Philadelphia and Brooklyn, as he had hosiery businesses in both places, he eventually decided to move his family to Brooklyn.

In December 1882, William married Kate (Catharine) Rogers, she loved all the children and took care of them as if they were her own. She and William also had six children and after a time, moved to Queens, New York.

William eventually sold his hosiery business to Hanes.
