Mahlon was the son of Mahlon Sr. and Margaret Cooley Wilson of Morristown, New Jersey. Identified siblings were: Peyton and Phillip (1940 Census). On 16 Jun 1989, Mahlon married Marilyn N. Tuggle in Hennepin County, Minnesota (Minnesota Marriages). Identified stepchildren were: Sherrie Tuggle-Apple, Thomas Tuggle (wife Susan Baile) of Boulder, Colorado; Rebecca Tuggle of Albuquerque, and Alana Tuggle of Charlottesville, Virginia.

On 9 March 1946, S1C Mahlon Pitney Jr. (Service #573 55 00) began serving aboard the Haskell-class attack transport USS Rawlins (APA-226). He was mustered aboard the Rawlins in April, July, and September 1946 (Navy Muster Rolls).

After the cessation of hostilities, the USS Rawlins was on "Magic Carpet" duty transporting Army troops from the Philippines to San Francisco. On 27 July 1946, she terminated her last Operation Magic Carpet run at Pearl Harbor, then swung south, transited the Panama Canal, and on 5 August arrived at Norfolk for inactivation.
